Bagfull's Guide to Domain Transfers

This article will describe how to transfer a domain from another registrar to Bagfull Interweb and explains some of the common problems.

One general comment about transferring is that you will not lose out by transferring early and in general this is a good thing to do as many things can go wrong with a transfer if you have to go back and forwards to your old ISP several times to fix things.

.uk domains

.uk domains are easy to transfer to Bagfull. All you need to do is order the transfer via our order interface: choose "transfer a domain" if that is all you want to do, or if you are ordering it with hosting then choose "...needs to be transferred from another provider". Then get the existing tag holder to transfer the domain to our Registrar's tag which is Enom.

When they do this we will email you to let you know it has come across. Once it's in our database you can update the details on the domain through our account admin interface.

You will not be charged anything for the transfer though if the domain is expired then you probably will want to renew it as soon as it comes across; we'll email you if this is the case.

gTLD domains in general (.com/.net/.org/.biz/.org/.info/.tv etc)

Transferring a gTLD domain is reasonably simple in principle however it differs from registrar to registrar.

In general you need to:

  • Be the admin contact email address - if you're not then update this to a currently working address
  • Ensure that the domain is not in a locked state
  • Ensure that the domain has been registered for at least 60 days
  • Make sure you have obtained an authorisation code for the domain from your existing ISP

If you want to check the locked/unlocked status of your domain or its creation and expiry dates you should use whois and look at the section which will have a "Status:" and expiry and creation dates.

The general principle is that you order a transfer via our usual order interface: choose "transfer a domain" if that is all you want to do, or if you are ordering it with hosting then choose "...needs to be transferred from another provider". The admin contact then gets an email which they'll need to authorise in order to confirm the transfer. You will need an authorisation code for the transfer, so the system will take you to a webpage where you have to enter it.

Once you've completed this stage there is a secondary stage where the other registrar can decline the transfer. This is normally only declined if the domain is too young or too close to expiry.

If the domain is already with the registrar we have at our back-end then the transfer can take as little a few hours from start to finish. we will guide you with the steps in such cases by email. If it's with another registrar it will generally take a week or so to process. We will inform you if it fails.

If a gTLD domain transfer is successful the domain automatically gets renewed for 1 year so we charge you a transfer fee (see domain prices for up to date pricing). Like .uk domains, when it comes across to us we get an email confirming it and will email you to let you know. Once it's in our database you can update the details on the domain through our account admin interface.

Transfers which don't complete

If a transfer doesn't complete within a few weeks we will send an automated mail to check that you do still intend to transfer this domain. After a month and another couple of emails all records of the transfer will be removed from our end and you should contact us if you still require the transfer.

Tracking transfer status

You can track our transfer status from our admin interface though you are welcome to contact us if you are unsure what is going on.

DNS records

The DNS servers on the domain are not changed as part of the transfer so this means that if you want the domain to continue to function during the transfer you have two options. Either change the nameservers over to ours and set DNS up with us before you transfer it out from the previous provider or keep the records as they are and ensure that the previous nameservers continue to serve up the zone.
