Who actually owns a registered domain name?

Thousands of new domain names are registered every day. Sometimes the owner or person who registered that particular name will be obvious. For example, the domain name - www.microsoft.com - was more than likely registered by Microsoft Corp. But most of the time the actual ownership of a domain name will be unclear.

Ownership of a domain name is defined by the 'domain record' which is stored in your domain extension's Registry. Specifically, the information in the "Registrant" field is considered to be the owner of the domain, though for practical purposes the owner should be listed in the Administrator Contact field as well. You can see your domain record by using a whois lookup, such as the one found on http://www.www.bagfull.net/whois.php

Many times when you order a domain name, the domain registration firm will promptly register the domain name and use their own information as the registrant! This could be major problem if you ever want to change hosts, or if you have a falling out with your developer.

If you have a domain management control panel with you, you can always change the whois information from there and put 'your own' information there. The Whois information is the place where registry looks and decides for the domain name ownership (except for the trade mark cases).

We at bagfull provide and are 100% committed towards the ownership of the domain by the customer. Each domain name registered with us will not only have the control panel to manage various aspects of the domain name but also the domain will be registered in the name of the customer.

Further we do not charge anything in the name of transfer-out fee and nor do we keep any kind of lock over the domain to prevent them from transfer-out. In other words we assure that the domain registered by the customer is the rightful owner of the domain.

In case the customer fails to get the domain renewed before the expiry, we give customers a grace period of 19 days to get the domain back at the normal renewal price and this can be very well done from the domain control panel itself. If the customer still fails to get the domain renewed, the domain drops to redemption period and the registry redemption process has to be followed to get the domain back.

The moral of the story: don't let anyone register a domain name for you unless you absolutely trust them to use the right registration details! Always make sure your domain registration company provides you with a domain management control panel, this is most important towards the full domain name ownership.

As a side-note, Bagfull ALWAYS uses a client's information when registering domains.
